Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan: New CHED Chairperson

Dr. Patricia Benitez-Licuanan is a Filipino psychologist and a renowned educator.  Prior to accepting her post as Chairperson of the CHED, she was Chief Executive Officer of the Forum in English of the Philippine Business for Education at the Asian Institute of Management and Trustee of the Center for Asia Pacific Women in Politics. She  has actively participated in research, training, and advocacy work in applied social psychology and educational reform; human resource development; and gender issues. Dr. Licuanan was a professor and chairman of the Department of Psychology, and Vice-President of the Ateneo de Manila University.  She is a champion for gender equality not only in the Philippines but in the Asia Pacific region as well. Among the commissions she has chaired were: United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the preparatory commission for the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in 1995; National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women; and Southeast Asia Watch which is a network dedicated to advocating and monitoring the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. (brief profile posted in Freeman, June 2010)
